What do you need to Setup a Website

Creating a website should be part of creating an online presence for a business or organisation, especially in our global economy. Anyone who wants to be successful knows it’s quickly becoming a requirement to have a website or at least an email address, with a domain name that is similar to your business name so it serves as marketing for the business through branding. Research shows the majority of buyers first look online to compare services and products before buying. If you are not online you are missing out, so it is important to find out how to start an online presence.

But how do you do this? How do you go about establishing an online presence?

Step 1: Register a Domain Name

Without a domain name, you cannot setup a website or email for your business – it is the pillar on which everything else rests. So registering a domain name is the first step to setting up a online presence. There are several choices when it comes to registering domain names – in South Africa your website will typically perform better when South Africans are searching for it when you use a .co.za domain – so we recommend you get that as first choice. There are several other domain registration options as well, to see what options are available visit our Domain Registration page

In some cases you can also register a .co.za domain for free when you combine it with a website hosting page (terms and conditions apply)

Step 2: Sign up for Website Hosting

On its own a domain name is useless – it is like owning the street sign but not the house next to it – you can’t live in a streetsign. To be able to use the domain name for a website or email, you need to subscribe to a website hosting service. With web hosting you rent space on a server that is connected to the Internet and you can then use this space to create a website, and it is also used for email and database storage. The website hosting package also allows transfer of files and data to and from the server using the Internet. With the web hosting package you will also be allowed to access an online website control panel called cPanel that you can use to manage your email addresses and other features of your web hosting package.

Website hosting is usually paid for on a monthly or annual basis. To view the specification of our website hosting packages click here or or to sign up for a web hosting package go to the signup page

Step 3: Create a Website

There are several ways to build your website – the best is to let a professional website designer build one for you, but for the the do-it-yourself-ers among us, it is also possible to build the website using web design software like Dreamweaver or using an online website builder tool. Another option is by using freely available open source software that can be installed via the control panel and customised. These software packages are available for every purpose, from E-commerce to Forum software, and even a general Content Management System

Our hosting services cater for these options seperately:
* Do it yourself or professional designer – uploading of website files with FTP or the control panel, as well as database management in the control panel
* Online website builder software – RV Sitebuilder and BaseKit – you access these tools from the control panel and you design the website using a choice of templates in the sitebuilder. All website editing takes place online on the server and you also publish the created site directly from the sitebuilder to your hosting account
* Open Source Software – these can also be uploaded and installed via FTP, but the simplest way to install a range of software packages for free is by using the Softaculous software installer that is accessible from cPanel. Using a package like this is the easiest way of quickly accessing professional website features at low cost, but some work is required to customise the software to your own specifications

Step 4: Promote your website

Once the website has been created, it will be necessary to promote it and have search engines visit it and rank it so people can search for information and find your website. Unfortunately, as with everything in life, it’s not nearly as simple since there will likely be thousands of other website competing against yours and offering the same services and products. The process of increasing a website’s rank so it will attract more search results and resulting revenue, is called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), and it is a service we also offer
